How to Write Your Resume with ChatGPT: Method, Prompts and Limits

2026-10-08
7 min

Key takeaways

  • Yes, ChatGPT can help you write your resume: it structures, rephrases and tailors text to a job ad in seconds
  • It only knows what you tell it about your background: without precise facts, it fills the gaps with generic phrases, sometimes with made-up details
  • It can output a simple file, but careful layout and how applicant tracking systems (ATS) will read the final PDF are still up to you
  • The right method: you bring the facts, ChatGPT rephrases, you check every line, then you test the final resume before sending it
  • No need to paste your full contact details into a consumer assistant: they are useless for writing

What ChatGPT does well for a resume

ChatGPT is an excellent writer. It is especially useful to:

  • Rephrase a messy description of a job into short, results-oriented sentences
  • Tailor a resume to a job ad: spot the skills required and suggest where to highlight the ones you really have
  • Translate a resume while keeping a professional tone
  • Shorten a resume that is too long while keeping what matters
  • Proofread spelling and the consistency of dates and tenses

But a writer does not invent your career: it shapes it. Everything that gives a resume its value (your results, your numbers, your context) has to come from you.

Analyze my resume

The 5-step method, with prompts

Copy these prompts and replace the parts in brackets. One request per step gives much better results than a single "write my resume".

Step 1: give the raw material

Prompt: "Here is my background, unsorted. Don't write anything yet: ask me the questions you need to write a resume for [target role] (measurable results, tools, team size, context). [paste your background]"

Letting ChatGPT ask questions stops it from filling the gaps on its own.

Step 2: write the experience section

Prompt: "Write each job as 3 to 5 bullet points starting with an action verb. Only use the facts I gave you. If a number is missing, write [TO FILL IN] instead of making one up."

Step 3: tailor the resume to the job ad

Prompt: "Here is the job ad: [paste the ad]. List the skills and keywords it asks for, then tell me which ones are already in my resume, which are missing, and which I can honestly add based on my background."

Applicant tracking systems and recruiters look for the words of the job ad. Still, only add what you can actually do: one interview is enough to expose a skill that is not real.

Step 4: write the summary

Prompt: "Write a 3-line summary for this resume, targeting [role], with no superlatives or stock phrases ("passionate", "dynamic", "team player")."

Step 5: get it reviewed, then review it yourself

Prompt: "Read this resume like a busy recruiter. What is vague, repetitive or not credible? Don't rewrite it, list the problems."

Then read every line yourself: you are the only one who knows whether it is true.

Limits to know before you send it

  • Made-up facts. A language model fills what is missing with what sounds plausible: a number, a job title, a tool. On a resume, one such error can cost you the application
  • Text is not the file. Even when ChatGPT produces a file, it does not check how an applicant tracking system will read the final PDF. Columns, tables, headers and icons can make a resume unreadable for an ATS, even with perfect text
  • Feedback that varies. Ask for a score of the same resume in two conversations: scores and advice may differ. Useful for ideas, not to measure progress
  • A style that shows. The same phrases come back from one generated resume to the next, and recruiters recognise them
  • Your personal data. Phone number, address or date of birth are useless for writing: add them yourself to the final document

The two work well together: ChatGPT to rough out the text, a dedicated tool for layout, checking and tracking. If you prefer to do everything in one place, Workyp has an AI assistant built right into the resume editor.

Test your resume before sending it

Whether your resume comes from ChatGPT, Word or Canva, checking it takes a minute: upload it to the free resume audit to get an ATS compatibility score out of 100 and the first recommendations, no sign-up needed. Test the file you are going to send, not the text of the conversation. What Workyp does with your resume is explained on the your data page.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT write a resume for free?

Yes, the free version of ChatGPT is enough to write and rephrase the content of a resume. The layout and the final file are then usually done in a word processor or a resume tool.

Can recruiters tell a resume was written with ChatGPT?

Nothing forbids using AI. What recruiters notice are generic phrases that come back from one resume to the next. A resume written with AI help from your real results is fine; a generic one is not.

Which prompt should I use to write a resume with ChatGPT?

Avoid "write my resume". First give your raw background and ask ChatGPT to ask you questions, then have it write job by job while forbidding it to invent numbers. The 5 prompts in this article follow that order.

Does a resume written with ChatGPT pass the ATS?

The text can be perfect and the file unreadable. For an ATS, what matters most is the format (standard sections, no columns or tables, text-based PDF) and the presence of the job ad's keywords. Test the final file, not the text.

Can I give my personal information to ChatGPT?

It is not needed for writing. Add your contact details yourself to the final document, and check in ChatGPT's settings whether your conversations can be used to improve the models.
